Embracing Self-Kindness

One of the most important goals of therapy is to help clients be kinder to themselves.
We all have beliefs that shape our decisions, but sometimes, these same beliefs trap us in a cycle of self-attack. This negative self-talk—our inner critic—targets the most vulnerable parts of our personality:
❌ "I am worthless."
❌ "I can’t fit in."
❌ "No one can love me."
Imagine a child constantly hearing these words from a harsh monster. Wouldn’t you want to protect them? The same goes for our own vulnerable selves. We must stand up to the critic, chase away the monster, and offer ourselves love and care—to become the kind, supportive parent we always needed.
Weakening the critic is one of the hardest, yet most important, tasks in therapy.
